International Awareness and Involvement

World AIDS Day - held on 1 December each year, World Aids Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. Portsmouth Alumnae Chapter in collaboration with local institutions, such as Tidewater Community College, hosts seminars and workshops to educate and raise the awareness for support of the eradication of this deadly disease.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Elementary School (Cherette, Haiti) - Through donations of supplies, uniforms and funding, the Portsmouth Alumnae Chapter supports the Water and Education International Student Collaboration for Haiti Outreach Opportunities for Learning (WEI SCHOOL) Project established to provide an adequate school facility to include clean water for school children in Haiti
THIKA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL (Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa) - A maternity wing and health services in Thika Town were funded initially by Delta in 1955. Support in the form of monetary contributions continues to be required for property maintenance, equipment and program expansion at the Thika Memorial Hospital, renamed Mary Sick of the Mission Hospital. Funds designated for Thika should be sent to: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Thika Hospital Fund, P. O. Box 96181, Washington, D.C. 20009. All funds received will be forwarded by Delta to the appropriate authorities in Kenya. Sorors should not send monies directly to the hospital.
